This is over a year old, but I found it on my itunes the other day. If you don’t know the Avalanches, you really should. Before Girl Talk, way back in 2001, the Avalanches were one of the first bands to make sample-heavy music (well, DJ Shadow was doing it back in 1997). Their album, Since I Left You, includes over 3,500 vinyl samples. This is a newer mix leading up to their new album that is supposed to come out either late this year or next year. To go with the GT comparison, I have to say that this mix is just as or even more fun than any Girl Talk album. It includes some of my favorite tracks from Al Green/Jackson Five/Donna Summer…etc, adds old rock faves from the Who/the Beatles/Bon Jovi, and even finds room squeeze a bit of Manitoba/My Bloody Valentine.
